Puppy Dog Collars and Other Essential Puppy Stuff

Dog collars are one of the first pet supplies you’ll want to be sure to purchase when you’re planning for the arrival of a new puppy. A new addition to your family is an exciting time.

You can find a lot of great pet supplies or dog supplies online. Not only are there some great dog collars and dog tags available that will look adorable on your new fur baby but dog collars are an essential dog training tool, too.

You can buy dog collars, dog harnesses, dog muzzles, and even dog backpacks to strap onto your pet for training, correction, and safety.

Some collars are a part of a harness and are designed to make it difficult for your pet to pull you. Some collars go over the pets mouth and attach to a muzzle. Some collars are choke chains, designed to put a stop to pulling because you attach the leash through a loop that will pull tight if your puppy tries to get too far ahead.  And some collars operate genetically with a ring for a tag and leash but look great due to specific designs or personalising.

What else do you need for your puppy?

In terms of pet supplies, here are a few ideas beyond the dog collar:

  • A leash. There are a lot of leash options on the market and your pet supplies provider may have a few options for you including nylon or leather leashes or perhaps a jewelled leash. Some leashes are equipped with a hold-all pocket that you can fit items into, such as bags for then you stoop to scoop and other places for your keys, change, or a snack. You’ll even find special leashes designed for use when you want to ride a bike and leash your dog to trot along side you.
  • Dishes. Puppy dishes for food and water are nice. You can use any dish but these sorts of dishes are less likely for your pup to knock over.
  • Food. You’ll want to choose the right puppy food and you’ll want to buy some treats as well so you can pamper your pup and use them as a great training aid.
  • Grooming supplies.  Grooming supplies are important. Start as you mean to go on with good grooming habits for your pup and you’ll minimise pet hair, sharp nails, and get him or her adjusted to grooming so that it won’t be a big ordeal.
  • Extras. You should consider shopping for a vet, considering pet insurance, and you might even want some fun extras such as doggie clothing, a carrying case for car rides, and a doggie bed (although chances are that your new puppy will prefer sleeping with you — if you allow it!

Enjoy your new puppy!

Question by Nicky: How much does it cost to buy all the things your dog needs? (Bed, food, bowls, bones, etc.)?
For the first day?

I’m an adult, and I think I found a dog I want to rescue. I just want a ballpark for how much to spend at the pet-store. What is reasonable?

What do I need to buy?

Best answer:

Answer by prettyxlush
At the petstore alone probably around $ 500, then to the vet in the next 48 hours, another $ 200. Keep some in the pocked for emergency vet visits too. My shelter expects a donation of at last $ 200 per dog, dnno about yours though.

You will need to buy a crate, a cage (if you want to leave the dog home alone and give it some space to roam before it has full house privileges), a leash or two, a collar or two, a long leash, pee pads if house training, doggie poop bags, a dog bed, food bowls, food, a brush, lots of toys, nail clippers, a harness, a dog tag, dog treats, training treats, dog shampoo,

and thats all I can think of now.

[I:http://dogpetbed.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ToddAlbertMcGing0.jpg]There are several people that think using shock collars on dogs is inhumane and even cruel. This is just not true because shock collars are made to help us keep our dogs safe. If you have a dog that doesn\’t listen to you then your dog could get hurt or even killed. All over the world there are dogs that run into the street even with their owners calling for them to come back but they don\’t and they end up hurt or dead. This does not happen to any dog that was trained with a shock collar.

A dog that is trained by a shock collar does not always have to wear they collar it can come off once they have been trained. The collar is for the dogs safety they are not there to cause the dog harm. Even experts have said that the shock the dog feels is similar to the shock we feel from a static electric shock. It is not painful to us and neither is it painful to the dogs.

The only thing the shock collar does is helps keeps the dogs attention while he is being trained. They are able to learn very quickly when they have a shock collar on. They also learn even quicker if they are given a treat when they do good.

If you use the shock collar and treats while training them they should learn very fast and be able to have the collar removed. If you do not know much about shock collars then it is best that you read the whole instruction booklet before you use it.

There are several settings on a shock collar and you do not want to hurt your dog. It is always best to start out on the lowest setting. Once your dog is trained the collar can come off and they will still listen to your commands as if the collar were still on.

You can buy different types of shock collars depending on what type of training you are planning to do. You should probably speak with someone at the pet store about the collar first. They will be able to tell you which collar would be best for the type of training you are going to be doing. You also need to measure the neck of your dog so that you know what size collar you will need.

You can buy shock collars for many different things. If you have a dog that barks a lot you can buy a shock collar so that they stop barking so much. Every time your dog barks it will give them a shock and pretty soon they will learn not to bark. It wont take them long to learn to stop barking and then you can remove the collar.

The barking shock collars do not have devices for you to press because the collar knows when to send a jolt. Other types of training collars have devices for you to push a button a send an electric jolt if your dog does not obey you. These collars do not know when to send a jolt unless you press the button on it.

Messenger dog paddling across a canal to reach its handler, in France, during World War I. The dog pictured swimming across this canal worked as a messenger dog in the front line. Scrolled up messages in waterproof containers would have been attached to the dogs collar. Dogs were also used in the trenches to kill rats and mice, thereby protecting food supplies. In addition to carrying out messenger duties and various other tasks, a regimental mascot also helped to maintain the troops morale.

Messenger dogs that served in the British Army were recruited from Battersea Dogs’ Home in London, then trained for active service at The War Dog Training School in Shoeburyness, England. The dogs that successfully completed their initial training then received an overseas posting to kennels at Etaples, in France. From Etaples, the dogs were posted to kennels near the front line, where they joined up with combat units.
