Bringing home a new puppy can be a very exciting experience for you and your family, especially if that new puppy is your first pet.  Before you do so you must ask yourself if you are prepared to bring that new puppy into your home.  In order to be prepared, you must have the essential items that will help you properly care for your puppy in the best way possible.  Some of those items are discussed in this brief article.

One of the important items that you will be required to have when you bring your new puppy home is a dog cage.  This cage is crucial in the beginning stages of your puppy’s life not only because it helps keep him confined to one place at night while you’re sleeping, but it also begins the training process that puppies must undergo in order to become obedient.  The dog cage is a very important training tool as it sets boundaries for the puppy early in his life so that later when the puppy is growing up, he will be more successful at becoming a well behaved dog.

Another important item that you will need when you bring your new puppy home is a collar and a leash.  Your new puppy will also have to get used to these items since they will be wearing them for most of their lives.  The collar and leash allow you to have control over where they go when you’re outside with them.  This will help train them as well as they will gradually learn to stay close by and not wander off.

Also, a comfortably dog bed will be a necessary item for your new puppy.  You’ve already gotten the dog cage for him to stay in at night, now he’ll need something warm and soft to sleep on.  A nice and soft dog bed will do just fine as puppies like to snuggle up at night in order to retain the body heat that they have.  You want to make their cage as comfortable as possible so a great dog bed will help make them feel at ease in their new environment.

Finally, some other items to consider purchasing are some dog toys, water and food dishes, a brush, and perhaps a few little dog treats that you can give them on occasion.  The toys will help keep them occupied when you are not able to give them attention.  All of the items will help to provide your dog with the best possible living arrangement.

As a pet owner, one of the best investments you can make is a pet bed.  It will provide your pet with protection in the winter from the cold floor, and give them the proper support they need to get a good night’s sleep.  Some older pets need the right bed to help them with arthritis or joint pain.  Choosing the right pet bed is very important to both you and your pet.  These tips will help you choose the right dog bed or cat bed for your furry friend.

There are some things to consider when choosing the right pet bed, as there are many different types and styles to consider.  To begin, you will need to observe how your pet sleeps.  This will help you decide on the best bed for your pet.

Some dogs and cats like to sleep in a stretched out position, either legs out to the side or laying on their belly, with their legs out in front.  Most larger dogs like the stretched out position.  Other dogs and cats like to curl up in a ball, snuggled up and cozy with their favorite dog toy or cat toy.   Determine which way your pet sleeps, and measure your pet in that position.  Be sure to consider if they sleep in different positions, and measure in their largest sleeping position.

If your pet likes to stretch out, you may want to go with the square or rectangular pillow bed, slumber bed, or one of the cushioned mat-type beds.  Be sure to add five to six inches for more comfort.

If your pet likes to curl up in a ball, consider a bumper bed, round pillow bed, or a type of nesting bed.  Some pets like the security of being surrounded on all sides and have a place to snuggle up with their favorite dog toy or cat toy.  If the bed has sides, be sure and get the inside measurements, and add three to four inches for comfort.

Another consideration is to make sure the bed is easy to clean and machine washable.  When purchasing a bed, you may want to consider getting an additional cover to use while you are washing the other cover.  Pick out a color and print that you like and you can choose one that goes with your home decor.

In conclusion, all dogs and cats need their own little space, a comfortable place to retreat, where they can go when they want to rest and relax.  It will be a benefit for you by keeping your pet off the furniture, and your pet will benefit by having a healthy, safe, and secure place of their own that they will love.

Face it, you like toys.  So does your pet.  That’s because toys are a fun source of amusement for your pets when you’re busy living the part of your life that doesn’t involve leashes and plastic bowls with the name “Killer” across the side of it. Plus proper use of toys can keep your pet healthy (and you thought they were just good for making fun of Bower when he spins out chasing it across the linoleum).  Toys put your pets in the habit of regular exercise as well as building a sense of enjoyment that will keep them young. After all, a playful pet is a healthy pet.

In fact, toys play a major and important role in emotional and mental development of your pet (they may not have the same effect for you, sorry). They offer a great solution for boredom, inappropriate chewing and anxiety (and you thought you had problems).

Now keep in mind that just like the multitude of mood swings your furry friend can have, there are a multitude of toys to choose from, but hey, variety is the spice of life, and don’t worry, when it comes to picking the toy that’s right for your pet you just need the right information from your pet. To start with, let’s say your cat is touchy and demands a smorgasbord of play things, the message in those creepy green cat eyes is simple, buy cat toy. Dog owners don’t worry because dog’s always have the same idea on this as the cats and it’s just as simple; buy dog toy.

So just where do you do that?  You will find that smorgasbord of pet toys at any pet store, and they come in affordable prices. But before you walk in like a cat-eye hypnotized zombie chanting “buy cat toy” or “buy cat toy”, put some thought into what to look for in a cat or dog toy (after all, let’s be honest, you’re going to play with it just as much as they are).  Also, don’t forget to buy dog toy while you’re there.  

So, to get you started here are a few tips to keep in mind while purchasing;

1.  Try to buy a toy that matches your pet’s size, not your size.  

2.  Make sure that there are no dangerous small pieces, as your pet could try to swallow it leading to choking, whereas if you tried to swallow it you just might feel really weird for the next three days.

3. Bones and sticks can splinter and cause choking and vomiting. Actually, they can even perforate your pet’s mouth and throat (for those of you not in the know, perforating your throat is bad) so use non-splinter chew toys such as Nylabone Edible Bones, to allow your pet to gnaw with no fear.

4. Bells can be problematic for birds, besides just being really annoying. Use a treat dispensing roll toy instead, after all, food equals fun.  On that note do not offer any leather toy (if not specially tanned), paint or any wood preservatives to your feathered friend for they can be toxic.  So to recap, food equals fun, toxic equals not fun.

5. Cats often enjoy hiding out in plastic bags, and while you are unlikely to go to the pet store for the sole purpose of buying a plastic bag it is important to know because doing so can get their head stuck in it’s handle, leading to choking and suffocation, so you’re better off with a treat dispensing roll toy which will not choke or suffocate them.

6.  When purchasing toys online, make sure to do a price comparison before ordering because many online shops will offer seasonal discounts that you can cash in on.
And lastly, make sure to supervise your pet while they play with their toy, this will minimize any accidents and then maybe later, if you ask nicely, they may even supervise you while you play with it too.  Enjoy the toy.
